LACL was born out of a grassroots passion of parents who were determined to find a better life for their children with disabilities.  This passion formed enduring connections not just among families, but for generations of families that followed.  Today, LACL continues to be moved forward by people united by a common goal, offering, among other things, mentorship, leadership, friendship, hope and support.

Becoming part of a group may be just what you need to:

  • become socially connected to people in a similar situation
  • get emotional support
  • develop the tools that will help you to advocate for your family and others in our community

As part of our commitment to nurturing these important connections, we offer several groups of our own as well as access to other groups of interest and value to parents and families.  They include:

    1. Parent to Parent
A monthly support group that has been meeting for more than 30 years - sharing the wisdom and supporting the experiences of families as they work on inclusion.

    2. Family Voices
A regional and provincial network of families that collectively advocates for children and adults with developmental disabilities that holds regular meetings and “Hot Topic” nights.

    3. Southern Alberta Disability Action Team
This is a planning and information, sharing and advisory group made up of parent representatives, self-advocates, service providers, and PDD that meets monthly to discuss areas of mutual information.

    4. Inclusive Education Parent Advisory Committee
School District #51 parent, teacher and school district representatives meeting to discuss best practices and issues around inclusive education.  A new Parent Advisory committee is beginning for the Holy Spirit School District.

    5. LACL PLAN
Lethbridge PLAN (Planned Lifetime Advocacy Network) committee meets monthly to discuss and guide PLAN in Lethbridge.

    6. Chinook Autism Society
Parents of individuals with autism meet to discuss areas of mutual interest and concern.

    7. Upside Down in Lethbridge
Parents of individuals with Down syndrome meet to discuss areas of mutual interest and concern.
